Does the length of a domain name matter?

The primary goal of a domain name is to engage and attract customers to a website, and while domain name length has a big influence on user experience, it does not have a substantial impact on user experience.

This means that user experience should be for everyone, yet not everyone likes, does, or thinks the same way. As a result, various groups or categories of consumers require distinct user experiences, yet you can’t please everyone. As a result, some people care about domain name length while others don’t.

Does

Again from the beginning of the internet, it appeared that the simpler the domain, the greater for a few purposes:

Simpler words are easier to read, memorize, and recall.
Simpler = Easier and faster typing
Shorter = Can be used on company logo or brochures.

Long domain names have an impact on the user experience. Some people have more than others.

If at all feasible, ‘power users’ learn how to prevent inputting the address.

However,

  • There will be some people who don’t have access to a browser that has a suggested omnibox.
  • There will be users that search and peck at the keys, not looking at a screen until the URL has been input.
  • There will be people who type all the time because they prefer the keyboard over the mouse.
  • There will be mobile app customers who don’t use copy/paste and typing lengthier domains is particularly difficult.
  • URLs are frequently seen or shared in a form that prevents copying and pasting.

and an often-overlooked user group:

  • Admin, support, management, and other in-house staff are users as well, and they will be utilizing the domain on a daily basis whether communicating, emailing, or connecting with folks outside the firm — keep them in mind.

It isn’t like user experience has a binary condition of being good or awful, or whether people are affected or not.

“Users and their experiences are constantly on a continuum.”

Although the instances described above involve relatively small groups of internet users, they might nevertheless be potential clients or, depending on your business or website, essential and/or major market segments. Missing out on these might have disastrous consequences.

On the other side, you could be targeting more tech-savvy and/or younger consumers, which doesn’t really influence you in this scenario

Doesn't

So, if your preferred domain name has been taken, you’ll have to consider the following options:

  • More words should be added
  • For a different extension, pay a bit extra.
  • Purchase a previously registered domain name.

You may always purchase a shorter domain used for business cards as well as other marketing assets. However, there is the inconvenience of having to pay for two domains…

One reason why domain name length is unimportant is that a longer domain name allows you to better explain your company, brand, product, or service, offering a clearer initial impression of what you have to offer.
